OrcaLive Messenger, English Version Ver1.3
"OrcaLive Messenger" is an application that notifies you in real time when orcas are in the vicinity of Hanson Island.


System Requirements

1) Microsoft Windows 98 or later
(non-Windows operating systems are not supported)

2) Macromedia Flash Player 6 or later

3) Internet connection


Installation

If Messenger is running, quit the application and delete the entire Messenger folder.

Alert: You must have the Macromedia Flash Player 6 or later installed correctly before installing OrcaLive Messenger. Please visit the Macromedia website at the address below to download and install the Flash Player 6:

1) OrcaLive Messenger Installation
    Extract the downloaded zip file "OLMe_130.zip" using Winzip or another archive extraction utility. Move the "OLMessenger" folder to the location of your choice. No further installation is necessary.

    Note: Be careful not to overwrite the old "OLMessenger" folder when extracting the new one. This can be prevented by deleting or renaming the old "OLMessenger" folder.

2) Run OrcaLive Messenger
    Double-click the file "messenger.exe" (fin icon) located in the "OLMessenger" folder to launch OrcaLive Messenger. If OrcaLive Messenger launches correctly, the fin icon will appear in your system tray.


3) Specify your location
    Right-click on the program icon in your system tray and select "Initial Setup" to display the "Initial Setup" window. Click on your current location on the map in the "Initial Setup" window. Once you have correctly selected your current location, click on "OK".
    This information will be sent by OrcaLive Messenger to our server, where the geographical distribution of people tracking the orcas is tabulated. (To see these statistics, click on the "Graph Tab".



4) Connect to the Orca Messenger Server
    First, make sure that you are connected to the Internet. Then, right-click on the system tray icon and select "Connect" to connect to the server. No further action is necessary.

    Note: Do not move files in the "OLMessenger" folder to any other folder.



Using "OrcaLive Messenger"

1) System Tray Icon
  • Icon Status
    Depending on the status of the application, the icon will appear in one of the following three forms:

    When connected to the server:
    When not connected to the server:
    When OrcaLab comments have been updated: (Icon will flash.)
    When Orcas are nearby: (Icon will rotate.)
    (This will occur as soon as an alert is sent out by the Orca Lab.)


  • Pop-up menu
    Right-clicking on the system tray icon will bring up the following menu choices:
    "Initial Setup" Shows the "Initial Setup" window, where you can set your geographic location.
    "Connect" Connect to the OrcaLive Messenger server.
    "Disconnect" Disconnect from the OrcaLive Messenger server.
    "Calendar" Shows the "Calendar" window


  • Open OrcaLive Messenger window
    Double-click on the icon in the system tray to open the Messenger window.


2) OrcaLive Messenger Window

The OrcaLive Messenger window is composed of the following three sections:

To show or hide the Comment Tab and Graph Tab, click on the triangle located to the left of each.
  • Messenger Bar

    Button to connect to www.orca-live.net:
    Opens your default browser and accesses the Web page www.orca-live.net.


    Time at Site:
    Shows the current time at Hanson Island, as well as the time of sunrise and sunset.


  • Comment Tab

    Displays the latest messages sent from the Orca Lab on Hanson Island.


  • Graph Tab

    Displays the number and global location of people waiting for the orcas. The number of people waiting for the orcas every fifteen degrees of longitude is displayed on a world map. Run your mouse over the map to display in the upper-right-hand corner the number of people waiting at that location.


3) Calendar Window

Displays the illustrated OrcaLive calendar.


4) Notice Windows

Display above the System Tray icon when OrcaLab updates its comments or issues an orca alert.

Privacy Policy

We value the privacy of the users of our OrcaLive Messenger program very seriously. The only information sent by OrcaLive Messenger to our server is the IP address of the computer and the "Current Location" set by the user.




FAQ

1) Installation
  • How do I uninstall OrcaLive Messenger?
    Simply delete the downloaded files and folders by moving them into your Trash Box.


  • Do you have any plans to produce a version for other operating systems?
    We are investigating the possibility of releasing a Macintosh version, but there is no definite timeline.


  • I don't know whether I have the latest version of the Flash player.
    OrcaLive Messenger will automatically check whether the latest version of the Flash player is installed on your computer. If it is not installed correctly, OrcaLive Messenger will not launch.


2) Using OrcaLive Messenger
  • The comments don't appear. Why not?
    If OrcaLive Messenger is not connected to the server on Hanson Island, the comments and the time at Hanson Island will not appear. Right-click on the icon in your system tray and select "Connect"


  • How do I set OrcaLive Messenger to launch automatically when I start up my computer?
    Double-click on "OLMUtility.exe" to launch "OLMUtility". Click on "Register in Startup folder", then click on "OK" and Messenger will automatically launch on subsequent start-ups.


  • How do I stop OrcaLive Messenger from launching automatically when I start up my computer?
    Double-click on "OLMUtility.exe" to launch "OLMUtility". Click on "Remove from start-up folder", then click on "OK" and Messenger will not launch on subsequent start-ups.

    Note: "OLMUtility" creates the file " messenger.lnk" in the "Start-up" folder if it does not exist, and removes it if it exists.
