Spyhopping
refers to the act of thrusting heads and upper bodies out of the water and then slipping back under. Sometimes it seems as if the orcas are motivated by sheer curiosity about seeing the scene above the surface. But spyhops happen most often when the whales are relaxed and being very social with each other.
