Their Name

CG/Yoshi Nagatsuka

Not long ago orcas were known mostly by the dreadful name "killer whales". Now, with the recent realisation that they do not attack humans, and live in highly co-operative social groups, they are more often called "orcas" - a derivative of their scientific name, Orcinus orca. Since orcas are found throughout the world they are of course known by different names in different regions. In Japan they are commonly called shachi or sakamata.
